Hello Again

Sat Dec 20, 2008, 10:33 PM
  • Listening to: Like the Movies- Avett Bros
  • Reading: Brother Odd
  • Watching: Nada
  • Drinking: Wine
So I am halfway through graduate school. I'm trying to branch out and do more studio art in my spare time to increase my skills, when I am not designing for theatre.

I haven't gotten much time to just sketch- but soon enough I'll hopefully have a study of faces to put up.

I'm also working on some painting ideas I have that are in the vein of "Reckoner".

Most of what I have up so far has to do with classwork. When I'm not in class, I've been designing shows pretty quickly- 6 over this past summer and 2 on top of each other while I've been in school this past trimester.

Very exciting!

So I'll probably be putting up more scenic designs as I go- along with some self-motivated projects such as a design for the Scottish Play in a black box and my ideal Peter Pan.

Thanks for watching/ reading!

Thanks for the watch... it's been awhile since I've updated, but I hope to add more over the holiday break.

You're going to school in Salem? Plan on making a career of theatrical design? Is your focus on scenic design, or do you branch out into lighting, charge-artist, etc?
:iconmsdrjeangrey:
I go to school actually at UNCSA in Salem and my focus is Scenic Design, though I have learned quite a bit of scenic painting in my short time here. I don't think I would like to charge professionally though- too much pressure! Just painting is far more fun :).
But yes I do plan on making scenic design a career. I've just designed my first opera and I've done several straight plays. I have not thought about branching out into lighting - I would say I understand the artistry but not the technology :).
What got you started in scenic design and what made you branch out?
:icondgolden:
I'm primarily a lighting designer, as far as designing goes. Although I did a few sound and set designs in college, my educational emphasis and fascination was with lighting. I've been doing lighting designs regularly for a few years now, but the job that puts food on my table is shop foreman at the Omaha Community Playhouse. I'm also teaching a general stage lighting class this trimester for the local community college. I became a shop foreman in part for the job security, but honestly I love doing a wide variety of things and don't like feeling stagnant. In the past six months I've designed lights for a small concert, several musicals and plays, carved & built a huge pair of Groucho glasses, designed two methods for "magically" knocking books off of a shelf, flown an actor with our own motorized rig, and taught apprentices of high-school and early college age innumerable theatre skills. In short, I've had fun!

Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever. It remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.
